Question
Russel, I am looking to cover my side yard which is currently all dirt. I am looking to use crusher fines mixed with fine cement.  I am also layering down weed fabric before putting adding the crusher fines.  My main objective is to minimize as much weeds from growing through the rocks as possible. Do you think using crusher fines with mixed cement is the best choice and also can I use cardboard boxes as a weed barrier?  Thank you for your input. Tim

I've used cardboard and newspaper as a weed barrier before, and it works quite well. I call it the poor man's weed fabric, but really it's just a way to recycle cardboard and newspaper rather than throwing it in the landfill.

As to crusher fines and fine cement, that's just going to be your personal choice. Nothing wrong with it. I used to use all sorts of rocks, gravel, etc., but here in San Diego I've changed more to bark mulch.
