QuestionCan a 3 year old connifer about 3m high be transplanted without risk? If so how should this be done?
AnswerHello Alma
The answer is yes but it clearly has to be done in the correct manner.
Ok, evergreens (that includes all conifers) must be moved either in the fall or, better still, in early spring just as growth starts.
Dig a big hole, allowing for a good sized rootball, cut off any roots that have ragged edges from the digging with garden clippers and cover the plant immediately, preferably with a plastic sheet.
It would be better to have the hole where it will finally be transplanted to already dug and ready with some compost mixed in with the soil that comes out from the hole.
Make sure that the transplant hole is about 30% bigger than the rootball, firm the soil in around the rootball with your heel and water thoroughly and the job is done!
Remember to water well every three or four days, especially in the summer until the plant grows roots (about 1 month).
Thanks for any bonus points in advance.
Kind regards
