QuestionI have been looking for a source for pecan shells to create walways and a drive at my home. My son went to college at a small college(Hendrix)in Arkansas and they used pecan hulls for all of the walkways on campus. They told us that they didn't wash away(surprisingly) and the acid content in them didn't allow grass to grow up through them, making maintenance a minimum. I have not been able to find a source though. If I can't find an answer, I guess my next step will be to call the college. I live in North Texas, where there are alot of shelling companies, but they don't sell the hulls. Thank you in advance for your answer to my question.
AnswerGreat stuff, but its popularity hasn't hit all corners of the market yet. Check all the bulk mulch suppliers around you (also may try calling local landscape companies and asking who they get mulch from). You may have to go far to get it (or they may not deliver it to where you live if it's not local). I don't think they make it by the bag yet. Texas is definitely the place for it though! Thats where the majority of it seems to come from.
This place supplies it- www.lawnworks-sa.com/pecan.html
And here is something said about it,
"<Pecan Mulch> looks great! Pecan Shell Mulch is a bi-product of the Texas Pecan industry. It's 4.6 pH level is acidic and advantageous to our high alkaline soil. A two inch layer applied twice a year in June & December will help conserve moisture, suffocate weeds, buffer temperature extremes, and it won't blow or float away."
