Hi
We live just outside Los Angeles in Santa Clarita which is warm and desert like.  We just installed a pool and need to know what type of plants will look good in our planters.  Do you have any thoughts/recommendations?

It really depends on what you like, how big the planters are and how much time and care you are willing to devote.
I would go to your local nursery and describe your planters to them and the amount of regular maintenance you are comfortable that you really will provide.
For example, if you aren't likely to remember to water them often then you need low maintenance plants like succulents, yucca, cactus, etc. If you will water them then there are more options. Also the larger they are the more you can do including small trees, bushes or mixes of plants.
