QuestionHi Sean,
I have recently completed pouring a 16' x 24' patio in my backyard. In the process of getting the ground prepped I had to dig out a massive amount of rocks / stones / and boulders all in varying shapes and sizes, up to 3' long, 2' wide, and 1' thick. Many I have used in various landscapes around the house, and they look great. But I have way too many to use... I think they may have used my backyard as a dumping area for these stones when building the subdivision (just a guess??) Is there a value to these, and if so, where would you suggest I go about selling them? I live in north Texas, and the rocks are red. I need to get rid of the pile of rocks.
AnswerDrew:
Rock really isn't worth that much and unless you have a semi-tractor trailer load it is doubtful anyone will take a serious interest. However, you may try by calling local stone vendors and describing what you have. Should be able to sell it to them for about 1/3 of what they sell it for at retail since the real cost is in handling and transport of the stone. So if they sell boulders for $120/ton then you'll be able to get maybe $40/ton if its easy to get.
A better option might be to print a flyer and distribute in your neighborhood rocks for $X each or something with sizes and pictures. Or place an add on Craig's list.
In any case best of luck.
