Front of house landscaping

Question
I live in zone 7a and would like to replace 2 infected holly shrube that are currently in front of a 10 ft wide window. In addition I would like to replace 5 old rhododendrum shrubs (these have stopped flowering) that are in the back row of my garden bed. I have golden junipers, cotoneaster and euyonemous shrubs planted in front of them. What is the best time to replace these shrubs and what would be suitable with minimal maintenance? I would like shrubs that do not grow very tall. The area gets sun for part of the day. Any suggestions would be very appreciated. Thank you.

Answer
Hi, Joanne-

Spring/Fall are usually the best time for planting...But with adequate water & care, just about any time in the summer will work too.  Just plant them either in the morning of late afternoon (avoiding added heat stress for the plants).  I'd avoid late fall after first frost & especially winter with snow/ice on the ground.

As to plant selection for your zone/orientation/etc., I like this website:

Just plug in the critera, out comes suggested plants for your area.

All the best ~Marc
