QuestionI live in rural West Virginia and have about a three acre yard. There are several "springs" along the hillside of my yard as well as a large swampy (wet) area in part of the flat part of my yard. Both are impossible to mow because the lawnmower simply sinks of slides sideways on the hillside. Can you suggest some plants and shrubs that would make some colorful covering for these areas?
AnswerThere are several ferns as well a iris and other wetland plants that will thrive in situations like you described. However it depends on the soil, the amount of water, sunlight and exposure also. Your best bet is to consult your local county extension office and ask if they have a wetlands plant list for your area. There are a few shrubs that will live in truly wet areas.
