QuestionHello
I'm from Canada, zone 5. I am considering re-doing my double driveway (20' across) this year (asphalt as anything else would be too expensive), with some interlock at the entrance and along the sides of the driveway. Along one side of the driveway will be a strip of yard (2' width) before there is a short retaining wall and the neighbors lawn (Their lawn is higher than our driveway). So, there will be water drainage to this little strip of yard.
My question is what do I put there? We are considering putting some crushed rock/stone there...Is this a bad idea? If not, what type of stone/rock should I put there? Would mulch be better? We'd consider some sort of shrub, but it would have to be super low maintenance. We have a young family, so the time available for yard maintenance is limited. (and we already have a huge yard!).
Also, I was thinking of putting some sort of urn at the entrance way to make the entrance nicer. However, it would be completely shaded. Is there anything that can possibly be planted in the urn, or is there some other way to soften up the entrance?
Thanks
Jeanette
AnswerDear Jeanette:
Your first question is really one of personal taste rather than any expertise. It is really up to you. Anything other than gravel will require some maitenance. I personally would do plants and mulch to provide some greenery and seasonal interest, not to mention hiding the neighbors wall.
As for your urn, there are plenty of plants that grow in shade. However, unfortunately I have not worked in Canada zone 5 and am not familiar with your plants. I would recommend you go to your local nursery and ask the same question of the plant expert there. Or consult a local book store.
Best of Luck
