Building a block fence

Question
I live in the county and would like to build a block wall down the edge of the easement road and around my property. How high can it be?

Answer
Hey, Mike.

When you say you live in the "county," are you here in San Diego County, or do you mean you live in the "country," meaning a rural area?

Notwithstanding where you live at this point, most jurisdictions allow you to build a block wall the same height as a regular wood fence. That's actually all it is, is a block fence. It's the height of the fence that can be different in different jurisdictions. Some densely populated urban areas allow five-foot fence, most areas allow six-foot fences, and some areas -- usually out in the country -- allow seven-foot fences or higher.

You'll also need to make sure that you don't encroach in any part of the easement, so even though there's a road there, the actual easement could extend a ways to the side of the road onto what you think is your property. So I would suggest a good survey of your property before you go building a nice block fence around your property only to be forced to tear part of it down sometime in the future because it encroaches on the easement.

Hope that helps.
