QuestionMy wife and I were at a landscaping place where we live in Florida and were looking to make a hedge along our 60 ft chain link fence. They said the areca palm makes a nice hedge. So I bought 13 so far and have planted them the recommended 2ft apart (they recommended that space for hedge)Now after researching various emails and articles, should I be concerned that these are planted too close? They have been in the ground two weeks now.
AnswerHello John,
From what I've learned, Areca Palms grow anywhere from 15 to 30 feet tall. So, I think that you will need to space yours at least 3-4 feet apart. Minimally, it will allow the plants to absorb the appropriate amount of nutrients they will need (without competing with their fellow Areca neighbors).
I'm not sure how tall your Areca plants are, but, keep in mind that younger plants (less than 5 feet tall) are sensitive to the sun and grow best with some shade.
Good luck :-)
Namaste,
Kathy
