replanting a pine tree

Question
I have a pine tree in my yard about 20 ft high. I would like to move it to another part of my yard. Can I replant it without the roots? I plan on cutting it down as close to the ground as possible.

Answer
Hey, John.

I cannot answer your question definitively without knowing what kind of pine tree it is and where you live.

However, 20 feet is a pretty good size and would seem to indicate that it is not a young tree anymore. That means that it has a pretty good root system and any kind of tree that size is going to need its roots in order to survive transplantation.

While some pine trees of that size can be transplanted, the root system can be pretty substantial depending on what kind of pine tree it is. The larger the root system, the more of it you need in order to successfully transplant the tree.

So, generally, I'd say no, you can't replant it without the roots.
