QuestionWe have an established willow tree and would like to plant some annuals or perrenials around it. How far out from the tree do we need to be in order not to disturb roots? And what types of flowers can be planted?
thank you...Pauline
AnswerHello,
Willow tree roots go out a long way,so you cant avoid the roots. Any drought and shade tolerant plant can be planted under the willow, but the willow roots will compete with them for water and so you need drought tolerant plants. Some examples of plants that can be used under willows are:
hosta (patriot variety)
pulmonaria (majeste variety)
laminium (nancy variety)
lambs ear
feverfew
viola
foxglove
acuba (shrub)
nandina(shrub)
daphne laureola
spurge laurel (shrub)
