QuestionHello Brandon,
We just bought a lot in western New York. Our house will be done at the end of this year, and we want to design and build our garden by ourselves.
I am totally new to this field. I am reading a book about trees for I think the trees should be considered first(I may be wrong).
Do you have any suggestions about books I could read? Do you have any good websites in mind?
Thanks a lot!
Qian
AnswerQian,
We could talk for hours about the principles of design....and I would love every minute of it.
But for the sake of time, check out these resources:
Landscape Design: A Practical Approach / Leroy Hannenbaum
Introduction to Landscape Design / John L. Motloch
Timeless Landscape Design: The Four-Part Master Plan / Hugh Dargan

check your local colleges and extension programs
Remember to start with a practical, straightforward plan that addresses the ENTIRE landscape. Typically, you will want to tackle hardscape issues first - retention, grading, patios, walls, structures, etc., and then move on to the softscape and planting plans. The general keys to having a gorgeous outdoor space are to be patient, do your research, design for your particular lifestyle,be mindful of the environment (use water wise plants and have a professional design and install your irrigation system), and plan, plan, plan!
Good Luck - BC
