QuestionI live in Southern Connecticut, Zone 6a, and would like to use Miscanthus Sinensis 'Huron Sunrise' as a foundation plant. I love the color and the height. My only concern is will this variety of Miscanthus Sinensis self-sow?
Thank you.
AnswerLisa,
Miscanthus is an invasive plant and has become a big problem in North Carolina and western Ohio. The keys to self-sowing are early season bloom, warm summers, and wet locations. When these three aspects occur simultaneously, aggressive seeding can occur.
I believe you can purchase a sterile variety of the Miscanthus Sinensis. Unless you are dead set on this species, try substituting Panicum. There are about 450 species in this genus, so do a little research. Panicum Virgatum may be a good choice - it will still naturalize like maiden grass, but is non-invasive.
Good luck - BC
