QuestionI live in central wi. It is 40's during the day and 30's at night . Have a new lawn. About2 months old. Just grass seed not sod. Is it to late to fertilize it? What fertilizer do you recommend. New homeowner.
Thanks
Answer I am not familiar with your specific conditions, but here are some general considerations.
1. Grass seedlings are very delicate and can be easily killed by chemicals.
2. New turf that is well rooted will use fertilizer in relation to:
- Temperature: If it is too cold the grass is not growing and will not utilize fertilizer effectively. At least 70 deg.F around the clock is a good guideline.
- Moisture: Plants cannot "eat solid food". Adequate soil moisture is necessary.
- Sunshine Hours: Days are shorter towards the end of the year.
Guessing at your conditions, I would recommend light liquid fertilizer applications until one or more of the above conditions become limiting. Here is a very good resource center.
