QuestionI live in the Lehigh Valley, Pa (18045). I recently installed a belgian-block driveway edging and plan to create a decorative planting margin between the blocks and the grass. I want a neat edge separating the decorative planting margin from the grass, and it MUST prevent root infiltration into the planting area. I've used vinyl 4" edging in the past but don't care for its appearance. I was thinking of buying Trex 12" wide boards and using those, burying them to a depth such that the exposed board is at normal grass-cutting height, but Trex is expensive and doesn't bend easily. What do you recommend?
Answer There are many products for the purpose that you intend.
Wood products are not the best choice.
There is an aluminium edging that has a clean top edge. When it is buried it is almost invisible. An edger or string trimmer will easily remove any errant runners.
Seeds brought in by birds or the wind will germinate. You can suppress germination of these by the use of a pre-emergent chemical; or use glyphosate on any emerged strays.
