QuestionI'm in San Antonio, TX where the upper 90's is normal in summer. I have one corner of my lawn (St. Augustine) that has no shade all day. In spite of watering when legal (we are often on restriction), it died completely. My question: Is it utterly idiotic to make a canvas type awning to protect this spot from the constant direct sun? I really believe I've tried everything else. I replaced the dead grass with Floritam flats. It's ok for now, as we've had a bit of rain. That will stop, though. Can you help? Thanks.
Answer "Floratam" does well in full sun and will endure high temperatures.
I am not sure that shade - or the lack of it - will cause the complete failure of a specific area. However, chinch bug damage is quite similar to drought symptoms.
You may do well to look into insect activity.
High temperatures and high humidity can cause fungus diseases and you want to eliminate these causes before nailing the cause to heat and\or light.
