killing weeds to grow grass

Question
All or most of my yard is weeds, I would like to get rid of them and grow grass.  It is a very large area.  What is the best/cheapest way to kill weeds in a large area?  Does rotor tilling help?

Answer
There are two ways to go.
!. If you are going to rototill, do so - deeply! And make quite sure that the soil is turned completely over. The objective is to bury all the weed seeds and tear up all plant material. After this, a combined raking and leveling operation should leave the yard in an excellent condition for sodding. Hopefully you have ordered in the sod and you are in a position to lay it immediately. Jam those pieces in closely and make sure that all seams are tight. If necessary, pour sand into any open seams to seal them. You want to completely smother all weeds. Despite your best efforts, some weeds will come up - usually through the seams. Seek and destroy these as a weekly routine.
2. Another way to proceed is to spray the entire area with a non selective, post emergent weed killer. The most well-known product is Roundup? Give it 7 to 10 days to get into the deepest roots of all the weeds. Then "weed eat" all the visible material to create a fairly level surface. Lay the sod immediately as described above.
