Using sugar to get rid of wild onions in the lawn

Question
The sugar an article talked about using to get rid of wild onions in the lawn. Are they talking about regular kitchen sugar that you buy in 5 pound bags or some special sugar you buy for the lawn? Any additional info on the subject will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Kathy Payne

Answer
It is regular brown sugar; and "browner is better". Molasses is used in the same context. But prepare for a sustained effort to obtain results.
The objective is to restore "life" to the soil. This "life" is a group of beneficial organisms which will make the ground on your front lawn more self-sustaining. Sugar is one (of many) raw materials which these organisms thrive on.
The conversion takes time and requires patience; but is well worth both.
