QuestionLos Angeles, CA - In early fall we seeded a dirt/weed area with Scotts Turf Builder High Traffic Mix after tilling and removing most of the clovers and crab grass that we could. We followed their suggestions on mowing heights and watering schedules the lawn grew in beautifully, lush, thick,m & dark green. No chemicals here, we try to do everything in the yard & our raised bed garden naturally. My issue is that in the last 2 months we have had a lot of little periodic rain fall, cold weather, and cloudy days which is not a typical Winter for So Cal. The lawn now has yellow blades throughout mixed with the dark green. It is not in patches but consistent throughout the whole lawn. The soil also seems damp to me, not the grass but the ground itself. I purchased the recommended fertilizer 'Turf Builder with Halts Crabgrass Preventer' to apply for Spring. I would like to make sure this is what I should do. I've read it could be iron deficiency, that the yellow would clear up when the weather heats up. I just don't want to lose my beautiful lawn and to be proactive. I know I'm asking a lot with out actually having a patch in front of you, but the nursery's I've visited all have something different to say.
AnswerHi Bree -
It is great you are being proactive! You are right, however, in that the yellow should clear up with the weather heats up. Because you're area is experiencing different weather than normal, the grass is simply reacting to that. It should return to its beautiful texture and color soon.
If in spring (or when the weather heats up) your grass is still having issues, which I don't think it will, feel free to come back and ask more for more advice.
Best of luck to you!
Thanks,
Steve
