QuestionI read your response about the sugar application to your lawn. In it you did not say the application procedure for the sugar, can you please tell me how to apply the sugar to rid my lawn of dallas grass. I live in Houston and my backyard is full of dallas grass and bermuda. I would like to keep the bermuda but get rid of the dallas grass. Please help, my wife is on me about finding a cure for my backyard. Also I have two dogs that use the backyard frequently.
Answer You have got me mixed up with someone else.
Dallas grass is very difficult to control in the lawn and I am quite sure that table sugar will not do it. The good news is that you have bermuda and want to keep it. The bad news is that only manual removal will permanently remove the dallas grass. You can spray glyphosate ("Roundup") on the patches of dallas grass. Any over spray will kill the bermuda but if you use a colorant in the spray solution you will see where you have oversprayed and you can cut out those areas and contain the damage. In time the dallas grass will die and you can encourage the bermuda to fill in by adding some top soil to the bare areas and water them well. Mow the bermuda at the shortest recommended height. In time you will have a presentable bermuda lawn but you will need to have a sound program of pre emergent application to prevent seeds of the dallas grass and other weeds from germinating.
