Questionwe are about to purchase some sod for our yard and i have two questions before we do. One, is it to late in the year to do so? I've read where ideal times are early summer. Summers are very hot here in southwest Texas, constant temps over 100. The days seem to be cooling a bit and temps have fallen to mid to lower 90's. Second, the contractor who built our home spread sand over the entire yard. about 4-6". Would adding topsoil to this and mixing it be alright prior to laying down sod?
Answer If there is regular soil below the sand, you can go ahead and lay the sod. If there is more sand below, add topsoil.
I recommend spring for sodding because it is fairly certain that good growing weather will be in the forecast. If you can be sure that there will be enough time for the sod to grow in and mature enough to withstand the winter's cold, then you can certainly go ahead and sod in the fall.
