QuestionWe live on the Central Coast of California. Our yard is nothing but sand, how should we prepair it for sod? and what is the best kind for all year round? Now for the main question we have ants don't the ants love sugar? And is sugar good for all plants? I Rock better for front yard or Bark for theborder areas ? Thank you , Jack
Answer You can grow a lawn on sand if you can give it the water and fertilizer. In time the sand will be changed for the better by the action of grass roots decay, thatch layer etc. Collectively, they will add organic matter to the topsoil but it will take time.
Optionally you can shorten the process appreciably by the addition of organic matter (topsoil) now, and sodding. As to the choice of grass, I will have to leave that to someone who has a more knowledge of your local conditions- the County Extension Agent in your area. I do not know for sure that sugar is beneficial for any plant. From what I know about the growth of bacteria, I expect that sugar and molasses will encourage their growth. If such bacteria are present and are good for the soil, then there should be improvement. Please do not ask me how much, how long and other questions like that. I simply do not know.
The material you choose for your 'hardscapes' is personal. I would choose bark for my own place. I accept that it will have to be replenished at least once a year, I might have to deal with insects and termites and that in heavy rainfall periods, it will make a mess of the surrounding turf.
