QuestionMY SOD IS ONLY 6 MONTHS OLD AND IS TURNING LIME GREEN WHAT SHOULD I DO ALBUQUERQUE N.M.
Answer You make it sound as if the whole area is lightening up in color. I am going to assume that irrigation has been adequate. If the grass blades are uniformly light green, this suggests a nitrogen deficiency. If you have put down a turf fertilizer, then the grass might be calling for another application. If you feel that you applied it recently enough to discount this, then the problem might be one of the elements which go into the manufacture of chlorophyll. Iron, manganese and magnesium are the prime suspects, especially if the individual grass blades have outstanding greener stripes. You can buy a liquid formulation of these elements and apply it at the labeled rate and see if you get an improvement. If this is demonstrated, then you might have a problem with uptake of one or more of these from the fertilizer which you applied to the soil. This occurs when the pH value of the soil is high (approaching 7.0 or higher). The soil might not be acid enough to allow iron to be dissolved and taken up through the grass roots. You then have a choice of remedying this (expensive) or using the liquid fertilizer as a supplement.
