QuestionI have a lot of small lumps of dirt (not worm droppings) in my lawn. They are little mounds about 2 inches in diameter. They harden as they dry and can really hurt bare feet. The grass itself seems normal, not yellow or uprooted. I live in Eugene, Oregon. I tried digging underneath some of the mounds. I found nothing.
Answer Mounds such as you describe are associated with creatures digging for insects; birds, armadilloes and the like. Do you know if there are insects, earthworms etc. below ground? If the area is very sandy, the mounds are easily leveled by mowing. If the soil has a significant clay content, then the mounds can harden and hurt.
