QuestionI followed the bags settings for my broadcast spreader and wound up applying 10 times the recommended amount of granular weed and feed.
What can I do to prevent a burn. I have read that it will promote leaf growth at the expense of the roots and burn out the lawn.
Thank you for your help.
Answer Look at the label where it says 'Nitrogen sources'; if most or all the nitrogen is soluble, readily available, derived from ammonium sulfate, urea or a '---- nitrate', then your best option is to leach the product into the soil by watering. Run the zone(s) for at least 30 minutes or until water starts to run off onto the sidewalk, whichever occurs first. Try to do this everyday for about a week. You want to dissolve the fertilizer and send it downward into your own property, not spread it over the neighborhood and into the storm drains. If the nitrogen sources are slowly available like "SCU" (sulfur coated urea) or similar, then the product will break down more slowly and release the nitrogen over a longer time. You might get off without doing much. Watch the turf closely every day. You are looking for crispy brown tips to the grass blades. If these occur, the grass is showing fertilizer burn. Water the turf as outlined above.
Allow me to wish you "Good Luck" because you will need some of that also. Please be careful with chemicals. The environment depends upon all of us being that way.
