QuestionI installed new midiron sod 4 yrs ago for my lawn.Never had problem till right now. My grass has basically died out,but some grass does remain.I live in arizona where the climate is hot,so it shouldn't be an issue.I have always aerated, fertilized, and my water schedule is always normal. I even cleared out my olive tree, and its always sprayed,so thats not it. I've never had any fungus,or insect issues,so thats not it. I tested my soil, and its okay. Even when I overseed for winter rye,its been fine, and I'll always thatch yard when necessary. What could the problem be???
Answer You seem to have done all the right things. The next question is were they done right? I think so because you have been at it for four years and only now have a problem. If you know that you did something different like applying a Weed and Feed product instead of a fertilizer only, then that might explain the damaged grass. Were weather conditions different this time when you did anything to the lawn? More rain or no rain after you applied fertilizer? Is it is possible that you missed a pest like grubs or mites? Nematodes? Assume that there has got to be something that was done or omitted. Think carefully. Did any of your neighbors have the same or similar problem?
If you cannot come up with anything and it happened quite suddenly, then I can think only that it was a fungus. If the temperature and humidity (can be increased by irrigation late in the day) are right, a fungus can spread quite rapidly. I am at my wits' end to find you an answer. Take the problem to the County Extension Agent near you. They will give you good advice for free.
I do have to add this final qualification for which I apologise up front. Accurate diagnosis depend upon two things:- Symptoms and History.
The symptoms are plain to see. The diagnostician will depend upon you to provide the history. Do so as accurately as you can recall. It will make all the difference.
