Answer
Before we can get rid of the brown spot, we have to find out what caused it in the first place. It is like being a doctor; and we will start at the easiest - insects.
Take 2 oz. lemon flavored dishwashing liquid and dissolve it in 2 gallons of water; pour this mixture very slowly over a 2'x 2' (4.0 sq. ft.) area of the lawn. It is very important that the area must include both brown and green areas. Pour slowly because you want the liquid to soak down into the ground. After about 5 minutes or so every living creature in the ground will come up to the surface. You want to identify these and zero in on the harmful ones. (Depending upon the size of the brown spot you might want to take more samples). If you cannot do the identification by yourself, put the insects in a "ziplock" bag and take them to the County Extension Office; take also a patch of grass so that they might identify the turf. They will give you very good advice on how to treat the problem. They are in the phone book under "County Govt."
If it is not an insect problem, then it is likely to be a fungus problem. This is a little harder to deal with but we will start with the simplest step. Examine closely the grass blades on the the green side of the brown area. You are looking for spots; brown spots, tan spots, yellow spots. The color and shape of the spots are vital clues to identifying the fungus.
Again, the County Extension Office is your best resource to help you identify and treat the fungus condition. Fungicides are specific to certain fungi. They are also expensive and in some States are tightly regulated. I would recommend that you use a professional service if you do have a fungus infection on the lawn. With a fungus it is sometimes cheaper and less hassling to cut out and resod/reseed the bad patch.
So there you have it - an interesting morning's work from which I hope that you will get to like the idea of playing lawn doctor and that you will find the County Extension Officers to be helpful and fun to deal with.
