QuestionHi, Thanks for the help. I live in Northern California and it is HOT, usually around 95 to
100 during the summer. My lawn area is appx. 5,000 sq ft. A local store sold me a 50
lb bag of "Best" fertilizer with Termic weed control. (16-6-8). I'm having a hard time
figuring out how much to apply with my Scotts 1000 drop spreader. The bag says it
should be applied at the rate of 4 lbs per thousand sq ft. So I thought I should need 20
lbs but the calculators say I need a lot more. Twice as much. Also what is the correct
app procedure. Is it OK to apply when it is so hot? I'd appreciate any help.

Answer A conventional recommendation is one pound of nitrogen per 1000 sq.ft. The analysis of the product you bought indicates 16% nitrogen. That means that the 50 lb. bag contains 8 lb. nitrogen and should cover 8000sq. ft. Your lawn of 5000 sq.ft. requires 32 lb.
You should find the settings of the different spreaders on the bag itself; failing this the store from which you bought either the fertilizer or the spreader or from the Scotts Company.
