QuestionI live in central Ms and just purchased 8 acres. I want to put down grass seeds. I need advice on how to get started. Wild grass and weeds currently is on the property.
Answer The subject line says 'sodding' but it appears that you are thinking about seeding. You must prepare a seedbed. The best way to do this is to plough the soil to a depth of 12". And to avoid any misunderstanding, plough means to turn the soil completely over. This will bury weed seeds to a depth where it will be difficult for them to germinate and grow. After you sow the seeds you will have to water and this will encourage weed seeds to sprout; so I will emphasize "Bury them!". The ploughed soil is disked to break it up further. Alternatively, you could use a rotavotor which will do both jobs in one single operation.
That done you can sow the seeds and then it is a matter of watering for germination and growth. Watering is critical to success. The most common mistake is to stop or cut back on watering too early. You are undertaking a large and expensive project; it will require much work but it will be immensely satisfying.
