QuestionHi. I was overseas for 6 months and in my absence my daughter planted grass seed in several areas I had not had prior success in. It came in beautifully. Now the rest of the yard looks BAD in comparison, much of it is STRICTLY weeds and/or crabgrass. A friend said i could spread a few inches of top soil right on top of the wanna-be-grass and replant new grass seed. Sounds too easy. The ground is like concrete now (central Ohio) and would be very, very difficult to dig up. Any advice? Thanks so much.
AnswerHi Gerle,
Actually, spreading some topsoil and seeding would probably work well, but I'd advise that you wait until September. As we head into the summer you'll find that new grass seedlings do not do well at all in the heat. You'll still find that weeds and crabgrass will be competing and trying to take over, so you'll need to do a little reading up on how to selectively get rid of weeds, but you have time for that.
Given that the ground is so hard, you'd be killing 2 birds with one stone anyway. The topsoil will provide a far better growing medium than the hardpan you have now.
Good luck!
