QuestionHi, I would like to grow a new lawn in my back yard after the construction of my house. The problem is, the builder just covered all the small debris of the construction with sand as a filler. It's been over 8 months, so a lot of weeds grew, but we killed them last week with Round-up. Is it reasonable to just lay an enriched top soil over all this, made of sandy loam and compost, and plant my grass seed on it?
AnswerThat's fine, but you'd need to make sure it is at least 6 inches deep after it all settles. Ideally, some good topsoil and organic matter (leaf compost) should be spread on top and lightly tilled in to the existing stuff. The more uniform it all is, the better it will drain and allow for root growth.
Good luck!
