QuestionHello,
Part of our lawn (in Michigan) is pretty free of weeds, partly because the previous owner of
our home took better care of the weeds around the house, and partly because the area in the
back of the back yard has so many mosquitos right now that I have a hard time hand weeding
it without being swarmed. Also, there are so many weeds (mainly dandelion, wild strawberry,
and wild carrot), that it is hard to get all the plants. I generally try to be as chemical free in
my yard as I can, but I'm considering minimal chemicals to give me a boost in my weed
fighting campaign. Our lawn is about 5,000 sq. ft. I bought an Ace Weed and Feed, but
haven't put it down yet, and after what I've read online I'm more hesitant. A couple of
reasons: the grass is going to seed and I don't want to interfere with that (if it does?), and
from what I've read, a weed spray might actually be more effective and less environmentally
impacting. Your suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much!
AnswerHi Remi,
The sprays can tend to be better because you can be more selective. You can take a little spray can and just squirt the patches where the weeds are, thereby minimizing the amount you use. A "Weed & Feed" needs to be spread over the whole lawn evenly. This means you are putting down weed chemicals where there are no weeds as well as on the weed patches.
I think that a careful approach of just spraying the patches of weeds as they pop us would be a nice balance for you. Otherwise, I'd recommend just living with the weeds. Pulling them out is a losing battle, and they really aren't hurting anybody, right?
Good luck Remi.
