clay soil

Question
I have been living in central NJ now for 10 years and always have a problem with my lawn hard areas to grow grass, grass overly wet after watering or rain. I have not seen many eartworm since I am here. I have read some of your earlier answers and have been told it is clay. What can I do to improve it. If coffee gronds do I just sprinkle on grass best time, earthworms, compost etc., etc. Thank You

Answer
So you are sure that there are no pests and diseases issues. Is the whole lawn overly wet or is it so in patches? If the latter, it may be that there are depressions which need to be filled in gradually so as not to smother the grass. If this is not the case then the area needs to be aerated or broken up in some way so that the grass roots can go down in the soil. This will help the rain or irrigaton to infiltrate and so the physical condition of the clay will be improved. It is a slow process.
