QuestionHave problem with moss in lawn one area of property. Front lawn is shaded during summer but partly shaded in spring. Have many pine trees around front of house. Thought pine trees lowered ph causing poor grass growth & promoting to moss problem. Turned over soil last year, added lime & top soil to low areas. Reseeded with shady grass seed and have sprinkler system to water about 30 minutes. Grass came up fine but found this spring, most of new grass gone and moss is back. Live in central Michigan. Not sure what to do to have decent front lawn. Don't have problem with any other lawn areas around home, only this front area.
AnswerHi P.J.
Your approach was right, but my experience has shown me that you need to put an obscene amount of limestone down in order to get the full effect. So, basically, that's what I do.
Whenever I do this, I put down enough limestone to cover the ground completely, then till it in to the top 1/2 inch of the soil. Usually about 3 or 4 years later, a little bit of moss begins to creep back in. 5 or 6 years later, you need to just do it again.
Good luck my friend!
