QuestionI had a strip of grass around 120 feet x 20 feet that has been almost totally taken over my moss. I have put lime down but it doesn't appear to help. Any ideas how to kill the moss and grow grass? The ground seems to stay pretty wet back there.
AnswerHi Cindy,
I assume there is also too much shade, which will make it difficult to grow grass under any circumstances. That said, first you need to rip the moss out so there's nothing left but bare dirt, then apply limestone at the rate of about 75 - 100 lbs per 1000 square feet. Trust me, this is a LOT. Next, till the lime into the top 1 inch of soil (no need to go deeper), and seed with a good shade seed.
Once moss has taken hold, nothing really gets rid of it well, so you just have to rip it out, then change the circumstances so that it's less optimal for moss growth.
Good luck!
