Killing grass

Question
My sister and I are new home owners, we have a very small yard and we would like to be rid of our grass and instead plant clovers.  Three reasons, we are Irish and are going for an Irish theme, we would like to avoid buying a lawn mower and also to avoid mowing our small lawn.  What is the best and easiest way for us to get rid of the grass, without destroying the soil nutrients and can you suggest the best clover?  Thank you!!  Sarah and Renee

Answer
The most effective way is to spray the area with glyphosate. It will be stated on the label under 'Active Ingredient'. I strongly suggest that you give it adequate time, about ten days, for the chemical to reach all parts of the plants. By this time, everything will be brown. Any green areas will have to be resprayed and given more time to die. Glyphosate has a very safe track record because it has no residual effect in the soil. It will not affect whatever you may plant later. All of this depends upon you following all the label instructions.
I am unable to recommend any variety of 'clover' because I have always considered it a 'weed'. Before you think that I am insensitive, let me quickly add that there are many things I admire about the Irish, especially when their "eyes are smiling".
