What to do about an overgrowth of weeds?

Question
I just moved into a home in a new development and there are weeds galore.  I have NO (zip, nada) knowledge about upkeep and mainenance of a yard.  I do know the grass is Bermuda and it will be exposed to hot summers and humidity.  The yard was just cut; the grass is still low, but the weeds are quickly growing and overpowering the yard.  What do I need to do?  Also, I keep getting ant colonies throughout.  How can I fix this?  Thx

Answer
Hi Rae,

You need to apply a selective weed control product, but I hesitate to recommend much more, given your lack of knowledge about yard upkeep. This is a bit like saying, "My car's not running properly, and I have no knowledge of mechanics. What should I do?"

This is not rocket science, but it isn't finger painting either. You'll definitely need to study up a bit, ask for guidance when confused, and talk to friends who actually do know what they are doing.

A selective weed control product is something you can spray on the grass, the weeds will die and the grass will be fine. For it to work though, you need to be very careful about applying it precisely and accurately. That's the part you'll need to study up on.

That video clip seems to be a pretty good one to give you the initial basics for lawn fertilizing.

Good luck Rae.
