Reseeding and Topdressing

Question
I bought a home in south Georgia that has a lawn that is more weeds than grass. There are also some low areas that pool with water after heavy rains. My local lawn care guy is recommending that we add about 1" soil to the whole yard plus some additional in the low areas to level it off and then re-seed the entire thing.  My concern is that it will kill of the grass we do have or will it help to get the new seed to grow?

Answer
You have some grass growing among the weeds; is that the grass that you will plant and grow into a lawn?.
If your answer is "NO", kill everything and start over. The suggestion by the lawn care guy is a good way to go.
If your answer is "YES", you do want to keep whatever grass is there, then you want to selectively kill some of the plants. This has its difficulties but it is not impossible. There are chemicals that will kill some plants and leave the others alone. This requires plant identification, chemical selection and careful application of the selected chemical. In most instances this requires specialised knowledge.
