Sand not soil zone 9b

Question
My mother lives in zone B (Orlando area) and has beyond what I would call poor soil. I went to help her in her yard a week ago and discovered that she does not have any soil - her front yard is a beach! Is there anything we can do or are we going to have to buy truckloads of soil to be able to grow things? I appreciate any help/suggestions.

Answer
It depends upon what you want to grow.
A lawn will be comparatively easy. Establish the grass, water and mow it regularly and after many years you will have improved the soil also. If you are after a kitchen or a flower garden, then use raised beds. Use untreated landscape timber to frame out the beds, fill them up with good topsoil and plant your flowers or vegetables. You can achieve good results by digging individual planting holes for your plants and amending the planting holes with topsoil. Set the individual plants in these prepared holes and you are on the way to having a garden.
The biggest challenges to working with sands are watering and providing organic matter.
