Killing Weeds, Re-Seeding

Question
I live in SE Michigan, near Ann Arbor, I have fairly large lot, one acre, and it is as much weeds as grass. I have a couple questions, first what is the best way to kill off the weeds, and if need be the whole lawn, without killing the small pines planted in the last couple years.

Second, once this is accomplished, what is the best type of grass seed to put to put down in a sandy soil to grow in this area, most of my front yard gets a lot of sun all summer long, while the back is about half and half, part sun most of the day, and part is shady a large portion of the day as it back up to a woody area.

Once the old growth is killed off, what steps need to be taken to clear the land, do I need to add top soil before seeding etc.

Thanks

Answer
Hi Sean,

Selective weed control products are meant for exactly this. If applied correctly, they will kill the weeds without harming grass. Depending on the size of the small pines though, you'll want to steer clear of them. They'll probably be fine, but why run the risk of harm?

Once you spread the material and kill off the weeds, I'd recommend aerating (with a core aeration) and spreading a Turf Type Tall Fescue. This would be the best grass for your area. Added topsoil is always a good thing, but often unnecessary. First try the weed-then aerate-then seed approach and see where it gets you. If it still looks bad, you can always take more drastic steps later if needed.

Good luck Sean!
