chickweed

Question
We just moved into my husband's great-aunts house and she was elderly and couldn't pull the weeds well we have ALOT of flower beds and ALOT and I mean ALOT of chickweed that has took over out flower beds...my question is is there anything we can put down with stuff we have around the house that would kill the chickweed but won't hurt our flowers we have in the flower bed?

Answer
Stellaria media (chickweed) is a winter annual. It will decline and die as summer comes along. This is fortunate because it is very difficult to control a broad leaf weed in a flower bed. My suggestion would be to use a scuffle hoe to dislodge the weed and dispose of it. Then apply a pre-emergent granular weedkiller immediately after. This will prevent new weeds from growing.
Maybe you plan to replant the flower beds. In this case, apply the granular pre-emergent as the label dictates.
I cannot over-emphasize the absolute necessity to follow all the label directions. Most pre-emergent products prevent root development and they will do this to your desirable plants too.
