QuestionI live in NW Arkansas (the dreaded transition zone). Our
builder laid Bermuda grass sod. There are several things I
don't like about Bermuda. It is slow to green up in the
spring, it sends out runners that invade my flower beds,
and during the summer, it reseeds itself which makes the
yard look like it needs mowing just days after mowing. I'd
really like to take advantage of the benefits of a Fescue
but am not sure the two grasses are compatible. The east
side of my house gets very little sun and the Bermuda isn't
doing well there, but I'm wondering if I can over-seed
Fescue on my Bermuda lawn and have them co-exist without
problems. My hope is that I could have a green lawn
earlier and later in the season and minimize the unsightly
reseeding issue. I'm afraid that I'm stuck with the runner
issue.
I'd really appreciate your help!!!
AnswerI don't see why you shouldn't be able to give this a shot, but I'm not sure you'll really be happy with the results. It will look very spotty with the Tall Fescue growing in patches within the Bermuda, and it'll look really strange in the cooler months when the Bermuda's brown and the fescue is green.
That all said, you certainly won't hurt anything if you give it a try.
Let me know what you end up doing!
