When is the earliest i can seed a new lawn?

Question
Hi, We just filled in a large area behind our house in Western Mass. that was a swail in order to level off for a wedding this June. I was wondering when the earliest we could spread seed is to allow enough time for the new lawn to establish?

Answer
If you seeded now, it would come in, but it would take a while as the soil temperatures aren't high enough yet. Every season is a little different, and the grass seed won't really grow until the soil temperatures are above 50 degrees. This usually doesn't happen until the air temperatures are above 70 consistently.

I would recommend seeding about the 3rd week of April, then make sure to water diligently. The biggest trick with new seed is keeping it wet. As soon as it dries out, it stops growing and lays dormant until more water hits, so make sure to keep on top of it.

Good luck with the wedding!
