QuestionGood Afternoon....I was just reading the post regarding the gentleman that moved to Athens GA and placed Bermuda sod over existing Fescue -- I live near Athens as well, however my dilemma is quite the opposite. I come from up north and cannot stand Bermuda grass, it is not child or pet tolerant and does not wear well at all. We have to have Bermuda in the front and side yards, but the back yard we can do whatever we want. What I was hoping is if I planted fescue, will fescue prevail over the weed like Bermuda? I need a green, lush, child/pet friendly lawn! And the crabgrass here is ridiculous! Any thoughts on a home remedy for that as well is greatly appreciated! Have a great day and thanks in advance for your advice! Janie
AnswerHi Janie,
I have to be honest. The Tall Fescue is going to be a tough battle for you, and I recommend caution if you choose to go forward. Bermuda is very tough and can really take over a lawn. One of the reasons so many people like it is because it is so self sufficient.
The Fescue will not naturally prevail, but with a lot of targeted effort, you might be able to maintain it as primarily fescue. The only other option is to live with the bermuda and learn how to manage it so that it is as good as it can be.
Good luck with it. Sorry I couldn't give you a more welcome answer!
