Old Pasture Yard

Question
Hi - I live in western NC and we have been in our home for almost 7 years.  Our yard has never been desirable.  We have no shading trees so our yard gets plenty of sun.  Our problem is even after aerating sewing new grass seed and laying straw we still have many bare areas that is just dirt.  We can't seem to grow any grass in these certain areas.  Also, we have lots of crabgrass and those ugly wild onions.  What is your recommendation for our problems?

Answer
As with many questions I receive, I just have to take an educated guess here since I can't actually see your property. My guess is that the grass seed just isn't getting enough water, or it's not mixed into the soil well enough, or a combination of both.

Make sure to till any new seed into the top 1/2 inch of the soil and water it daily until the grass is long enough to mow.

As for treating the crabgrass, it's a matter of preventing it before it grows in for the season. At your local garden center, you should be able to find a good crabgrass preventer that you can apply.

Let me know how it goes!
