QuestionI have just moved here to North Carolina and we have some bare spots in our lawn. We have seeded the spots, but we notice that some people place hay after seeding the area...is there a reason for this?
AnswerHi Lisa,
The hay protects the seed from heavy rains with could disrupt the seedlings, and it helps keep the soil moist, which improves germination.
It's not critical, but it can help. Just don't bury the seed in a thick mat of hay, otherwise you'll have to carefully remove it in a few weeks, and that can get tedious. If you'd prefer not to hay, just keep up on watering daily for best seed growth.
Good luck!
