Its Febuary

Question
QUESTION: I have Bermuda grass its not green and its not died, I am watering it and I want to have green grass. Is it to late to apply winter rye or what do you recommend to get green grass in this part of season. thank you, armando

ANSWER: Hi Armando,

The Bermuda won't green up with the water. It is brown because it is too cold. The water cannot change that.

You could overseed with Winter Rye if you want, but by the time it starts to look good, the Bermuda will be greening up anyway. Next Fall, as the Bermuda starts to go dormant again, plan on overseeding with the Ryegrass. I've included a helpful link that explains how to do it.

Good luck!

QUESTION: It's Febuary. What do i do to my bermuda grass? Do I start arated? pre emergent fertilizer? ( what does that do?) and dillo dirt (what this for?) Thanks ,Armando

Answer
Dillo dirt is the composted lawn clippings picked up by the town. It's perfectly good stuff to use.

For now, I wouldn't recommend doing anything to the Bermuda since it is dormant. Just hang in there. Once it starts to green up, you can give it some organic fertilizer to perk it up. If you have the time too, you can aerate, spread a thin layer of the "dillo dirt" on the lawn and rake it into the holes. This will help enrich and improve the soil. As next winter approaches, plan to do the winter seeding with the perennial ryegrass.

Good luck!
