Flortam fertilizer

Question
I purchased a foreclosure in 08, built in 05 and lived in for 6 months in a gated community.

For the most part the grass is thick with few weeds that I have been able to control with Image.

Some areas are thin where you can see the stolons and Image also works well in those areas with more weeds.
I mow as high as possible.

I know thicker is better, so I need advice on what type of fertilizer blend is best to thicken the lawn to avoid more weeds.
Should I fertilize now, and then use Image before the temps get to 85.

I am writing from the city of many foreclosures , Port St Lucie.

Thank You for your valuable advice.

Answer
It would be very useful to find out why the grass is thin in some areas. Pest? Disease? Too wet? Too dry? You might be able to correct the problem easily and permanently. Very often, with new homes, there is a patch of weak turf which can be traced back to where the builder stored (or buried!) building materials.
To stimulate grass growth, I suggest that you use a "turf builder" type of fertilizer. Make sure that some of the nitrogen is slow release. Phosphorus (the middle number on the bag) should be very low. Put down the fertilizer when the temperature gets up to 70 degrees round the clock. Check with your City or County Authorities; there might be some regulations concerning fertilizer application. Also, check to make sure that you are applying the right number of applications of "Image" for the season/year.
