frost damage

Question
hey Ron,,

I live in central Fla, I have a st Augustine lawn, flortram, and we just had a freezing 3 days, my lawn now is brown,, what should I do to bring it back,, should I water it a lot? ,what type of fertilizer should I put down to help it bounce back,, once its warmer should I wait to cut it till its really long?  Help. Thanks so much.

Answer
If the lawn was green before the 3 days of low temps. then it is very likely that it has suffered some damage but it is not necessarily dead. I would do nothing before Valentine's Day. (And if you do not know the date, then it is in your interest to find out ...quickly!). By this time some 'green' will be sprouting to show where the grass is alive. You can mow with the height set to remove as much 'brown' as possible, but not any of the green. Fungus will be the problem to watch for so try to rake up as much as possible, the dead material. Irrigate sparingly but adequately to keep the regrowth going. Irrigate as late in the morning as local regulations will allow and on sunny days. You want the water in the soil but not on the grass blades for any long time. Check often for fungus and treat if it occurs.
Do not be in a hurry to fertilize and do so within the guides set down for your area.
